Lesson Plan 2
Unit of Study: Addition/Subtraction Ocean Theme
Standards: Students will learn how to add and subtract. The standard being used is KOA4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation. KOA 3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1). '
Goals:
1. Students will learn how to make ten by joining groups together with objects, drawings, and/or manipulatives.
2. Students will be able to take apart a number using manipulatives or drawings to find out how many are left. 3. Students will be able to answer “how many in all?” while listening to or creating story problems of their own.
Engage:
Students will be asked if they want to go on a bear hunt? This will engage and motivate students into the lesson by adding teddy grahams for story problems.
Explore:
· Students will use story mats and teddy grahams to solve addition problems.
·Students will figure out ways to use teddy grahams to tell story problems to their classmates.
Explain:
·The teacher will guide instruction by modeling what is expected using the materials given. The teacher will explain that when more bears come along, which they are to count all the bears together. However, when a bear runs away hen you take them away and count how many are left.
· During this time, the teacher will use vocabulary to enrich the mind and further develop math knowledge and skills.
· Now it is the students turn! Students will take their knowledge and share their own story problems with the class. They will use the vocabulary and skills taught in order to carry out the lesson.
· Students will be able to answer how they solved their problem.
Elaborate:
·Students will watch a BrainpopJr video called “Making Ten”

·The teacher will stop and guide students along the way and check for understanding.
Evaluate:
· Students will complete activity/quiz following the video. The teacher will utilize the computer lab so all students can do quiz on the computer!
Extend:
·Students may play the game to further develop understanding.
·Students will go back to the class and do centers.
